The EU is considering opening accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova, which could irritate Ukraine, given the parallelism of the candidates.

The Republic of Moldova could get a significant boost in its EU accession process, overtaking Ukraine for the first time before September's parliamentary elections. EU officials are considering opening the first negotiating chapter for Moldova, which would bolster pro-EU forces in Chisinau. The move could cause tensions with Kiev, as both countries have been granted EU candidate status in 2023. Although Moldova could move forward, Ukraine faces blockages, especially from Hungary, complicating the situation for pro-enlargement EU states.
