According to the POLITICO publication, Hungary has indicated that it will abandon its opposition to Ukraine's request to join the European Union, thus facilitating the start of official negotiations for the accession of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. The opening of the first "cluster" of negotiations is scheduled for June 15, during an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg.
The accession requests of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova were submitted simultaneously, and the advancement of the Republic of Moldova depends on Ukraine's progress. Budapest, which has vehemently opposed Ukraine's accession in the past, has signaled an openness to lifting the veto, following meetings between Ukrainian and Hungarian experts.
Although a Hungarian official stated that no final decision has been made, discussions are ongoing. Ukraine has provided assurances regarding addressing Hungary's concerns, and EU ambassadors will finalize the position on the opening of the negotiation cluster by the end of the week. The opening of the clusters requires unanimous approval from all EU member states.
