The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that Moldova's request to join the European Union will be a priority during the rotating presidency of the European Council, which will begin on January 1. Christodoulides promised tangible progress in the next six months to help Moldova move closer to its goal of EU membership, a request submitted in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, emphasized that EU membership is essential for the country's sovereignty, considering the threats from Russia. Sandu argued that the EU's expansion will strengthen Ukraine's security and prevent Russia's influence in Moldova. Additionally, Moldova has received praise from the EU for the reforms undertaken in view of accession, and Moldova's membership is considered in tandem with that of Ukraine.
