The president of USR, Dominic Fritz, stated that the interpretation of the National Integrity Agency (ANI) is absurd, after the deputy mayor of Timișoara, Paula Romocean, was declared incompatible.
Fritz emphasizes that Romocean was penalized for two volunteer positions, a common situation for many local councilors in Romania. He criticized the regime of incompatibilities, stating that it has become a method to eliminate politicians without evidence of corruption.
Fritz mentioned that ANI misinterprets the law, applying severe sanctions for unpaid positions. He also highlighted that in 2023, the Court of Justice of the EU emphasized the importance of respecting the principle of proportionality in such cases. Romocean announced that she will contest the court's decision, arguing that she had no conflicts of interest between the two positions.
Fritz called for a change in the law to limit ANI's power to decide who can represent citizens.
