Diana Buzoianu, the Minister of the Environment, announced that in recent days false information has circulated on social media regarding a draft law that is currently in decision-making transparency. This draft transposes a European directive that Romania must implement to avoid infringement procedures. Buzoianu emphasized that the normative act does not target small farmers or private wells, but focuses on the illegal abstraction of water in industrial cases that can cause significant damage.

The project introduces severe penalties for environmental crimes, with imprisonment of up to 20 years for serious offenses. It is also expected to tighten sanctions for legal entities and implement measures to prevent environmental crime. The project will be promoted for adoption after the formation of a new Government.
