Romania has secured the position of Director General of the Southeast European Law Enforcement Center (SELEC) on Cătălin Predoiu’s final day in office at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Mădălina-Sorina Vlangăr was elected in the first round on Wednesday at the SELEC Council meeting held in Bucharest, in a contest against representatives of Serbia and Albania.
Predoiu made the announcement on Facebook. The former minister described the result as a success for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a process that had been worked on for nearly a year, and said the election represented a vote of confidence in Romania’s proposed vision for the organization’s future.
SELEC is headquartered in Romania’s capital and is described as the only organization in Southeastern Europe carrying out regional operational activities against cross-border crime. The institution brings together 11 countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Romania, Hungary and Turkey.
Predoiu thanked the ministry colleagues who prepared the candidacy and wished Mădălina Vlangăr success. On the same day, Marian Neacșu took over as Minister of Internal Affairs at a handover ceremony held at the institution’s headquarters.
