The PSD reacted on Friday to the statements of interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan regarding the amendments made to the Integrity Law, after he claimed that some amendments were introduced "only for political favors", not for increasing transparency. The social democrats accuse Bolojan of false statements and assert that the referral to the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) could jeopardize European funds amounting to 771 million euros.
In a statement, the PSD claims that the USR and PNL's move to challenge the law at the CCR is not based on constitutional arguments, but aims to protect a convicted individual, risking the loss of European funding.
The social democrats assert that the amendments proposed by the party aim to sanction officials who "violate integrity rules" and do not correctly declare their assets. The PSD has described the referral to the CCR as "hypocritical," criticizing the positions of the current leadership of USR and PNL.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that verifying the constitutionality of the amendments is "necessary" and asserted that they were not adopted for the purpose of increasing transparency.
