The government will implement a new vehicle taxation system starting next year, according to Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This will take into account both the engine capacity and the pollution level of the vehicle. Owners of old cars will pay higher taxes, while those who own new vehicles will benefit from discounts of approximately 20%. However, the new system is controversial, as manufacturers and importers of cars argue that it will encourage the purchase of old and polluting cars, having minimal differences between taxes. Bolojan explained that the base tax will be proportional to the engine capacity, penalizing the ownership of old cars and encouraging the purchase of new ones.
