Cătălin Predoiu sharply criticized USR leader Dominic Fritz after he described US President Donald Trump as a “lame duck” following the Democrats’ victory. Predoiu says the statement is impolite and could harm Romania’s strategic interests.
In a public message, Predoiu accused Fritz of importing the United States’ domestic political conflicts into Romania and confusing ideological sympathies with the national interest. The former minister says that a US president serving a second term is not powerless and that statements by a Romanian political leader about the head of the country’s main strategic partner must be made responsibly.
Predoiu cited military and economic cooperation between Romania and the United States, as well as projects in energy, infrastructure, technology and the defense industry. He asked the USR to specify what it has concretely done to support these objectives, in a regional context marked by the war in Ukraine, hybrid threats and tensions in the Black Sea.
The message also addresses the growing closeness between the PNL and the USR. Predoiu asked Ilie Bolojan to clarify whether the two parties can build a common vision on foreign policy and the strategic partnership with the United States. Finally, he responded to Fritz’s statement that he did not want “to attach himself to Predoiu,” asking the USR leader to present his concrete achievements and political record.
