Interim Interior Minister Cătălin Predoiu criticized, on Tuesday, the assessments presented by Mircea Abrudean during hearings for the ministerial position, arguing that reform of the Interior Ministry cannot be built as if its institutions were starting from zero. Abrudean received a favorable opinion from the joint parliamentary committees, with 22 votes in favor, seven against and eight abstentions.
Predoiu presented data on confidence in the Police, which rose from 50% in the autumn of 2023 to 53% in the spring of 2026. He said that, during the first eight months of the year, police officers responded to more than 103,000 cases of domestic violence, while the number of killings committed in this context fell from 54 to 44.
Regarding the leadership of the Police, the minister said that 33 of the 42 territorial structures have permanent heads, while four of the nine temporarily occupied positions have already been opened for applications. Predoiu emphasized that the structural problem is the staffing shortage, estimated at 23%.
He said that the Interior Ministry is already implementing measures related to digitalization, border protection and combating drug trafficking, but that deep reform also requires legislative changes, political stability and a strong parliamentary majority.
