Petrișor Peiu, leader of the AUR senators: “In America, gas is 24 times cheaper than in Europe!”

Petrișor Peiu, leader of the AUR senators’ group, criticizes the energy strategy under which coal-fired power plants are being shut down and replaced with natural gas units. The senator argues that this decision could increase energy costs and inflationary pressure, amid the large differences between gas prices in Europe and the United States.

According to data presented by Peiu, gas traded in the European Union has allegedly become more than 243% more expensive since the beginning of the year, reaching 97 euros/MWh. During the same period, in the United States, the price allegedly fell by 17%, to 3.06 dollars/MMBTU, equivalent to approximately 10 euros/MWh. “In America, gas is 24 times cheaper than in Europe,” the senator stated.

Peiu claims that the energy produced at the coal-fired power plants in Turceni and Rovinari would be 30–50% cheaper than the energy estimated for the gas-fired power plant in Mintia. He criticized delays to the projects in Iernut and Mintia, as well as the abandonment of some power plants planned for Turceni and Ișalnița.

The senator also cited the rise in oil prices, warning that higher gas and petrol prices could increase companies’ costs and pressure on the state budget, including through price caps for the population. Peiu concluded his criticism with the statement: “Stupidity and rule come at a price.”

Înaintea criticilor AUR, piața a fost deja afectată de riscurile pentru aprovizionarea cu energie și de perturbări legate de transporturile maritime prin Strâmtoarea Ormuz. Prețul petrolului Brent se menținea în jurul valorii de 110 dolari/baril, iar gazele naturale tranzacționate în Europa ajunseseră aproape de 90 de euro/MWh, în contextul incertitudinilor privind livrările.

Pe fondul acestui climat, analiștii au vorbit despre o „primă de risc” în prețuri și despre creșterea tarifelor pentru petroliere la niveluri record. Totodată, companiile europene de utilități au început să se reorienteze către cărbune, iar estimările menționau că producția pe cărbune ar putea crește cu aproximativ 25% în următoarele șase luni, în timp ce utilizarea centralelor pe gaze urma să scadă.
