President Nicuşor Dan stated on Wednesday evening that he understands the disappointment of those criticizing him on social media, but emphasized that emotion cannot replace the parliamentary majority necessary for the formation and functioning of a government.
The head of state explained that, although voters may want a certain political formula, democratic reality requires negotiations and compromises. “Unfortunately, 30% is less than 50%. With 30%, if you are not willing to negotiate and give up part of your program, you cannot reach 51% and govern.”
“The emotion is absolutely justified, because each of us projects a government formula that we legitimately and emotionally believe would best solve the problems of Romanian society. But there is a difference between emotion and desire, and a fundamental principle of democracy, which is the majority. Unfortunately, 30% is less than 50%. With 30%, no matter how good your intentions are, if you are not willing to negotiate and willing to give up, to concede part of your program, and reach 51%, you cannot govern. That is the simple reality I have stated several times. I understand this type of reaction, and of course I also have an ideal reality in my mind to which I relate. However, one thing is one thing, and another is another,” the president replied.
