President Nicușor Dan announced at a press conference that he will contest in court the decision of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) to withhold 930,000 lei from the amount spent in the electoral campaign for the presidential elections in May 2025. AEP discovered non-compliant donations, which led to the non-reimbursement of the entire requested amount. Nicușor Dan spent approximately 61 million lei in the campaign, of which 58 million were loans and 2.5 million were donations. He emphasized that he will contest the unreimbursed amount, with the process estimated to take two years.
Additionally, Dan reiterated his intention to donate the remaining money to civic organizations, organizing a competition for their selection, to support initiatives for transparency and respect for the law. AEP reimbursed 59.9 million lei but rejected the amount of 930,000 lei citing non-compliance in donations.
