Prime Minister-designate Luca Niculescu stated on Monday, on Radio România Actualități, that Romania needs a government that can not only secure Parliament’s vote but also govern. In this context, he proposed to the parties a support agreement for a period of six months, aimed at adopting priority measures.
Niculescu listed among the urgent matters the budget revision, adoption of the budget, economic recovery, strengthening defense capacity, and measures concerning the increase in energy prices. He emphasized that investors need a clear signal regarding Romania’s stability and predictability, as well as compliance with its assumed commitments.
Regarding savings, Niculescu pointed to reforming state-owned companies and increasing the collection rate. He rejected an exclusive focus on new cuts and advocated attracting investment, which, he said, has declined significantly this year. In his view, the budget revision is the “urgency of urgencies,” followed by the adoption of a credible budget by the end of the year.
The prime minister-designate is continuing consultations with the parties today and specified that he intends to present the government program and the list of ministers on Thursday. He said that he prefers a political government, not a technocratic one, but acknowledged that differences between the parties make it difficult to form a majority.
