Prime Minister-designate Luca Niculescu stated, after negotiations with the PNL, that he had discussed a possible PNL-USR-UDMR government, to which Social Democrat leader Sorin Grindeanu referred, but that it “was not a proposal he agreed with, at least today.”
“They listened to the proposal that came from the PSD and we discussed it. I would not say that these are conditions, but it did not seem to me to be a proposal that they received with the greatest openness,” Luca Niculescu said at the end of the discussions with the liberals, according to Digi24.
“I never take the first answer as the final answer; all options remain on the table, but it was not a proposal he agreed with, at least today,” he added when asked about a PSD-PNL-UDMR government.
In fact, PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan rejected, in a post published on Facebook, the scenario of a joint government between the PNL and PSD, after Sorin Grindeanu made it conditional on Thursday, following his discussion with Luca Niculescu, that the PSD would join the government only if the PNL and UDMR participated in the parliamentary majority supporting the future cabinet.
Niculescu stressed that he had known from the outset that bringing together the parties from the former coalition to pass a functioning government would not be a simple task, “otherwise it would have been resolved by now.”
“We are trying to work together to find solutions. My goal is to create a functional, competent government with a majority to ensure its proper functioning,” he added.
The prime minister-designate began consultations with the parliamentary parties on Thursday to form the new Government and obtain the investiture vote. After meeting with the PSD and PNL, a discussion with the UDMR is also scheduled.
