Kelemen Hunor explained the statement in which he stated that George Simion "checkmated", in the context of the vote for the Veștea Government, specifying that he referred to the entire political class and the general dynamics of the vote.

Asked by journalists whom George Simion "checkmated", he replied "Everyone. Everyone received checkmate".

"Some were waiting for the government to pass, others for different reasons. So, that is life. You have to acknowledge when you receive checkmate. So it is not a compliment, it is not something against George Simion, you simply have to acknowledge it. That is what happened. Until the last moment, he played and kept, especially those who were waiting for their votes, in a certain tension. That's it," said Kelemen Hunor.

In the joint plenary, Kelemen Hunor stated that "there is only one person who won today, and talent must be recognized", congratulating George Simion with the expression "you gave check and mate". The UDMR leader added that he is concerned, stating that "an era is ending".
