The Minister of Environment, Diana Buzoianu, reacted on social media after the promulgation of the ANI law which contains the controversial "Fritz amendment", sending the message: "What a shameful day for Romania".
This provision leads to the termination of the mandate of the mayor of Timișoara, Dominic Fritz, leader of USR, who stated that "the rule of law in Romania no longer exists". Fritz accused that the law is a political revenge and promised to continue the fight against corruption.
The controversial amendment stipulates that individuals in a state of incompatibility or conflict of interest will lose their position within 30 days of the law coming into force.
USR claims that the modification was created specifically to target Fritz.
The Constitutional Court rejected objections related to the provision, and the debate has reached Brussels, where leaders of the EPP and Renew Europe have asked the European Commission to analyze the impact of the law on the rule of law.
The law was promulgated by Nicușor Dan, in the context of pressures related to European funds.
