The former Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan, announced on Wednesday evening that he has submitted a legislative initiative that provides for the reduction of VAT on fuels from 21% to 19% and the decrease of the excise duty on standard diesel, as well as the reinstatement of the crisis situation on the market.
Ivan emphasized that this initiative is supported by the Social Democratic Party and accused the "main right-wing party" of opposing a similar project, which led to the increase in the price of standard diesel.
He stated that high fuel prices affect the economy and citizens, benefiting the Government in return through higher taxes.
"High fuel prices do not help either the industry, the economy, or ordinary people. They 'help' the Government, which taxes Romanians more directly at the pump. Higher prices, higher revenues for the budget".
Ivan expressed hope that the initiative will be supported by all parliamentarians in the extraordinary session of Parliament, which will take place between July 27 and 31. This includes proposals for capping the commercial markup and regulating the export of diesel.
