Cristian Diaconescu stated on Sunday evening, on Digi24, that the idea of American interference in Romania’s domestic politics is “ruled out,” following information published by The Wall Street Journal about statements attributed to the U.S. ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle.
The former Foreign Minister distinguished between the strategic relationship between Romania and the United States and reports about an informal meeting at which the American diplomatic representative allegedly conveyed certain messages to Romanian politicians. Diaconescu said that the Strategic Partnership with Washington is an essential pillar for Romania’s security and long-term interests and must not be conflated with the domestic political dispute.
Diaconescu called for mature conduct at the institutional level, as the United States analyzes the future of its military presence in Europe. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is expected to announce by November 6 the options regarding the redeployment of American forces, including a possible reduction in troop numbers. The former minister warned that the political exploitation of the subject could generate reactions that would be difficult to control.
