PSD MEP Andi Cristea accuses PNL of contradictions over progressive taxation after liberal MEPs voted in the European Parliament in favor of an amendment supporting progressive tax systems. The vote took place on October 21, and Amendment 14 was adopted with 429 votes in favor, 219 against and 16 abstentions.
Cristea claims that the position expressed by the PNL delegation in Brussels contradicts the governing program presented to the Romanian Parliament on September 30. According to the Social Democrat’s statement, the document provided for maintaining the flat tax rate and introducing no new taxes or duties.
The PSD MEP says that all seven PNL MEPs present for the vote voted in favor of the amendment, with no votes against or abstentions. He accuses the liberals of supporting one position at the European level and a different one in Romania, describing the situation as “opportunism.”
In a message published on Facebook, Andi Cristea anticipated the argument that European guidelines are not binding and that taxation remains a national competence. He urged Romanians to check the MEPs’ roll-call vote on the HowTheyVote.eu platform. The European vote concerns employment guidelines and does not directly introduce a change to Romania’s tax system.
