Former Finance Minister and PSD deputy Adrian Câciu reacted on Friday, in a Facebook post, to the PNL's accusations regarding the manipulation of data concerning Romania's budget deficit. The Social Democrat claims that liberal Florin Cîțu previously made similar statements and accuses the PNL of misinterpreting the communiqué issued by the Ministry of Finance.

The reaction comes after the PNL asked the PSD to withdraw a communiqué published on the party's official page and to present the data regarding the Eurostat indicators correctly. The Liberals stated that the clarifications from the Ministry of Finance contradict the interpretation promoted by the Social Democrats.

Adrian Câciu claims that the deficit calculated according to the European ESA methodology is much higher than the one reported in the cash system. He cited Eurostat data for the second quarter of 2026, according to which Romania would have had a seasonally adjusted government deficit of 9.2% of quarterly GDP, compared with 3.5% in the European Union and 3.3% in the euro area.

The PSD previously stated that the austerity measures adopted by the Bolojan Government had not reduced the deficit and called for a change in economic direction. Câciu concluded his accusations against the PNL in a harsh tone, stating that the PSD does not manipulate data.
