Petrișor Peiu: The myth of the Bolojan government’s “competence” was shattered by Eurostat

The leader of the AUR senators, Petrișor Peiu, accuses the Bolojan Government of presenting an artificial reduction in the budget deficit and claims that Eurostat data contradicts the Executive’s official balance sheet. The statements were made on Thursday, in a Facebook post, amid reports on budget execution during the first six months of 2026.

“The myth of the Bolojan government’s ‘competence’ has been shattered by Eurostat,” Petrișor Peiu wrote.

According to the senator, the Government reported a deficit of approximately 2% of GDP, equivalent to 41 billion lei, while Eurostat allegedly indicated an ESA deficit of 3.7–3.8% of GDP, namely 75–76 billion lei.

Peiu claims that the difference of nearly 35 billion lei stems from the different calculation methods. He argues that the data presented by the Government are calculated “on a cash basis,” based on revenues collected and expenses paid, while Eurostat uses the ESA methodology, which also includes obligations incurred but not paid.

The AUR senator claims that the Executive did not reduce the deficit, but merely postponed the payment of certain debts to suppliers and public institutions. In his view, the annualized deficit would reach nearly 8% of GDP, similar to last year’s figure.

Peiu also accuses the PSD of having been complicit in this situation and questions the effectiveness of tax increases and measures concerning teaching workloads. As of the time of publication, the Government had not provided a response to the accusations.
