During an event organized at the United States Embassy in Bucharest, expert Elizabeth Edwards-Spalding discussed the challenges of democratizing Romania, highlighting that the process takes time. Although Romania has an old culture, young people need to be encouraged to participate actively in politics. Spalding emphasized the crucial role of education and the media in combating the false nostalgia for communism, stressing that the freedoms and opportunities lost under the communist regime must be acknowledged. She encouraged a truth-based approach and understanding of history to strengthen democratic values.
