TikTok announced on Wednesday the launch of a new local tab in the app, which will show users videos from nearby businesses and services, based on precise geolocation data. This tab, called 'Local', will include content related to travel, events, restaurants, and posts from local creators. However, the tab will not be visible to users under 18, those with private accounts, or with restricted privacy settings. This initiative comes after TikTok was criticized in January for updating its privacy policy, which allowed the collection of precise location information. TikTok emphasized that sharing geolocation data is optional and that users can disable tracking in the app settings. The company also mentioned that geolocation tracking is disabled by default and only activated when the app is in use.
