Romania is preparing to become part of a select group of states with quantum computing infrastructure, by installing the first private quantum computer in Central and Eastern Europe in Iași, as part of the FreeYaMind Campus project, developed in partnership with IBM. The investment is estimated at over 100 million euros, and the system delivery is scheduled for this autumn. The project will provide access to quantum computing technology for universities, researchers, and private companies, with an important role played by Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași, which is involved in training and research programs in the field of quantum technologies.

Conf. Dr. Andreea Arusoaie explained that, unlike classical computers, quantum ones use quantum bits that can exist simultaneously in multiple states, allowing for the rapid processing of large volumes of information. The applications of this technology are vast, including cybersecurity, logistics, artificial intelligence, and the development of new materials. The installation of the quantum computer in Iași is considered a major step for the Romanian academic environment, providing researchers and students the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art infrastructure. However, the challenge remains the training of specialists in this multidisciplinary field.
