Matthew Prince, the CEO of Cloudflare, emphasized at SXSW that traffic generated by AI will surpass human traffic by 2027, fundamentally changing the way the internet is accessed and consumed. This change is driven by scalability; while human users visit a few websites, AI agents can generate thousands of automated visits to collect and synthesize information. In the past, bot traffic accounted for about 20% of online activity, but now, due to the constant data demand of AI systems, it is becoming the dominant force. This evolution requires companies to adapt their infrastructure, which was designed for human behavior, to machine-scale interactions. Prince suggests that the future of the internet will require new architectural approaches, including dynamic "sandbox" environments for AI agents. These "sandboxes" could be essential for an economy based on agents, allowing AIs to perform tasks quickly and efficiently. The impact of the increasing bot activity also extends to physical infrastructure, affecting data centers and the capacity of global networks. For businesses, critical questions arise regarding performance management and the protection of AI scraping platforms. Companies like Cloudflare are positioning their services to address these challenges, but the main message is that AI represents a platform shift, similar to the transition from desktop to mobile.
