OpenAI has begun testing a feature that allows the creation of chat groups for ChatGPT in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, enabling collaboration among users.

This update allows users to collaborate directly in the app through shared conversations, a first for the platform. The feature is accessible to Free, Plus, and Team users on mobile and web, and the purpose of this limited launch is to observe how users interact in groups before a global rollout. OpenAI emphasizes that personal conversations remain private, and groups are by invitation only, with the option to leave the discussion at any time. Users under 18 benefit from content filters and additional parental controls. Creating a chat group is simple, and groups can have between 1 and 20 members. Functionally, chat groups operate similarly to standard ChatGPT conversations, but with multiple voices, powered by GPT-5.1 Auto. To enhance social interactions, ChatGPT has been updated with new "social abilities," knowing when to intervene in a discussion and when to withdraw. This feature is part of a broader movement by OpenAI to build social and interactive layers around its technology, recently including the Sora 2 app, which allows sharing of AI-generated videos.
