Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Donald Trump’s decision to ease sanctions imposed on Russia and warned that the measure would encourage Vladimir Putin to intensify the war. The statement was made amid one of the most powerful attacks launched by Moscow against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Zelenskyy called the easing of sanctions a “reward” for the Russian leader and argued that it sends the Kremlin a signal that could facilitate the continuation of aggression against Ukraine.
According to The Guardian, Russian attacks targeted power plants in Ukraine in an attempt to cause blackouts and leave cities without electricity before winter arrives. Attacks on energy infrastructure are one of Russia’s main tactics during the cold season, putting pressure on the population and Ukrainian authorities.
Zelenskyy’s criticism comes at a time when Ukraine is calling for economic pressure on Moscow to be maintained and rejecting any measure that could reduce the impact of international sanctions. Kyiv warns that easing restrictions will not help stop the war, but could allow Russia to strengthen its attack capabilities.
