Volodymyr Zelensky requested on Sunday from his allies more air defense means, in response to Russian attacks that have left hundreds of thousands of Kyiv residents without electricity and heat. In a statement made in Vilnius, where he is participating in the commemorations of the Lithuanian uprising of 1863, Zelensky mentioned that in the last week Russia launched over 1,700 attack drones, 1,380 guided bombs, and 69 missiles.
He emphasized that missiles for air defense systems are essential daily and highlighted the ongoing collaboration with the United States and Europe to enhance the protection of Ukraine's airspace. Russian attacks specifically target power plants and the electrical grid, causing a severe energy crisis in the middle of winter, which has led to the declaration of a state of emergency in the energy sector.
