Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, published on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, that he is conducting his presidency in such a way that, after the war and his presidency end, he will be able to continue living in Ukraine and walk the country’s streets without being hated or threatened.
In New York for the UN General Assembly, Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump the same day. The Ukrainian leader said the issue is not only people’s respect, but also the possibility of remaining in his own country after leaving office.
Zelensky acknowledged that he had made mistakes during the war and that he is not sure he has managed to cope with the stress accumulated after years of conflict. He explained that negotiations are difficult and that, in order to help Donald Trump reach an agreement, he must hold numerous discussions every day and make delicate decisions.
The Ukrainian president stressed that he draws his energy from his responsibility toward his country and his people, hoping that he is surrounded by as many good people as possible.
