The Yum Brands group announced on Tuesday the sale of the Pizza Hut restaurant chain for $2.7 billion, in the context of fierce competition in the fast-food market, especially from rival Domino's, and a decrease in consumer spending.

The Pizza Hut restaurants in mainland China will be acquired by Yum China for $1.2 billion, while the network outside of China will be taken over by the investment fund LongRange Capital for $1.5 billion. Rising inflation and high raw material costs have affected the giants in the pizza industry, and demand has decreased amid the adoption of weight loss medications that encourage healthier food options.

Yum Brands began exploring strategic options for Pizza Hut after several quarters of declining sales. In 2025, Pizza Hut accounted for approximately 12% of the group's total revenue. CEO Chris Turner stated that these transactions will allow Yum to become a more focused company. Pizza Hut was acquired by PepsiCo in 1977 and was spun off in 1997, forming Yum Brands. In Romania, Sphera Franchise Group operates the KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell brands in a franchise system.
