The war in the Gaza Strip has had a devastating impact on the social structure, transforming tens of thousands of households into families led by women, who now have to support families without any income. Between October 2023 and December 2025, over 22,000 women and 16,000 girls have died due to bombings, and about 11,000 have suffered serious injuries.

Sofia Calltorp, head of the humanitarian action department of UN Women, highlighted the destruction of family units, leaving thousands of families in suffering. The situation is so severe that women are giving birth in the streets due to lack of access to medical facilities. Although the ceasefire in October reduced violence, it did not completely stop the tragedies, with over 730 deaths in the last six months.

Almost a million women and girls have been displaced, and 790,000 are facing food insecurity. UN Women calls for respect for international law and the integration of women into humanitarian efforts.
