The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning on Tuesday regarding the Ebola epidemic in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has led to 136 deaths and approximately 543 suspected cases.
While waiting for the necessary equipment, residents are organizing without protection, and hospitals are overwhelmed. Trish Newport from Doctors Without Borders highlighted the chaos in the medical system. Although Ebola has a high mortality rate, experts believe that a pandemic is unlikely.
The epidemic has been declared an international health alert, and authorities in the DRC have implemented border control measures. There are also no vaccines or specific treatments for the Bundibugyo strain. In this context, NGOs are facing a reduction in international aid, and authorities are calling for urgent international support.
The current epidemic was detected after it spread for weeks, raising concerns among experts.
