Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, stated that Donald Trump has consistently preferred a diplomatic solution in relations with Iran, but will keep all options open if Tehran continues its terrorist activities in the Strait of Hormuz.
Cheung emphasized that, considering the sanctions that have severely affected Iran's economy and the recent attacks on military sites, Tehran should return to negotiations. The White House's reaction came in the context of Trump deciding to postpone a major escalation of the military campaign against Iran, influenced by warnings from officials and military leadership regarding the risks of escalating the conflict. Among the administration's concerns are the decreasing stocks of Patriot interceptors and the vulnerability of Gulf allies. Although the Pentagon has prepared options for intensifying attacks, Trump opted to continue pressure through sanctions and open the way for diplomatic negotiations.
