The White House asked the United States ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Ann Guilfoyle, to resign, in an announcement made on Tuesday, October 13, by the new spokesperson for the U.S. administration. The decision comes after President Donald Trump said the previous day that he was considering removing her from office.
Trump said that his administration was “not satisfied” with the ambassador, amid reports of alleged misconduct. According to reports in the American press, a Republican donor allegedly claimed that Guilfoyle asked him for $100,000 to pay a credit card bill, promising him, in return, access to Trump administration officials.
The ambassador is also the subject of reports concerning gifts and luxury trips received from businesspeople. Guilfoyle denied the allegations, while her lawyer disputed the authenticity of certain messages presented in connection with the payment.
The former Fox News presenter and former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr. had been appointed ambassador to Greece by the Trump administration. The request for her resignation represents a development from the president’s initial statement, in which he had only said that he was considering the possibility of recalling her.
