Reacting to the proposal of a "legal Iron Dome", MEP Vlad Voiculescu argues that collective stigmatization and isolation only serve to fuel the cycle of radicalization, calling instead for a focus on the rule of law.

Brussels, January 27, 2026 – MEP Vlad Voiculescu criticizes the statement of AUR MEP Georgiana Teodorescu, who called for stricter anti-terrorist designations in a statement to the Israeli Knesset and criticized the EU's integration policies. Voiculescu contradicts her, considering that the AUR MEP's perspective on security and terrorism is misguided because history is "the graveyard of empires that believed they could rule through fear".

In brief

1. Voiculescu argues that radicalization stems from a lack of identity, purpose, and perspective, exacerbated by trauma and humiliation.

2. He warns that terrorizing specific groups based on ethnicity or religion inevitably leads to resentment and fascism, not safety.

3. The MEP states that true safety is based on the rule of law and equal rights, rejecting "slogans and blacklists".

While Teodorescu advocated for a "legal Iron Dome" and the isolation of radical groups, Voiculescu drew attention to the dangers of collective punishment. "Terrorize a child today and you will create a terrorist tomorrow," he warned, suggesting that harsh measures often produce the very enemies they seek to destroy. He emphasized that people radicalize when they are deprived of identity and subjected to violence or collective stigmatization.

Voiculescu explicitly rejected the effectiveness of physical or legal barriers when they lack humanity. "Real safety is not built from slogans and blacklists or walls – legal or physical, but from the rule of law, the protection of human dignity, and equal rights," he stated. He argued that isolating groups based on religious or citizenship criteria is a sure path to fascism.

Instead of isolation, Voiculescu proposed a solution based on integration and opportunity. "Treat a person as a person, give them a chance and perspective, and they will find purpose and contribute to society," he concluded. Only by addressing these human needs, he argued, can the world break the "vicious cycle of violence" that currently haunts the Middle East and beyond.
