Dozens of protesters attempted to storm the ultra-secure area of the United States embassy in Baghdad on Sunday morning, in response to the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. According to a security source, attempts to breach the security forces' cordon were thwarted, but protesters, waving flags of pro-Iranian armed groups, continued to throw stones, and security forces responded with tear gas. In other parts of Iraq, similar protests took place, and armed groups supported by Iran, including Kata'ib Hezbollah, declared that they would not remain neutral and would respond to attacks against them.

On Sunday morning, loud explosions were reported near the airport in Erbil, where the US-led anti-jihadist coalition troops are located. A pro-Iranian group claimed drone attacks against American soldiers in the area, and coalition forces shot down several rockets and drones loaded with explosives in that region.
