Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the importance of the Vertical Corridor, a strategic initiative aimed at reducing dependence on Russian gas. During a meeting with former Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Mitsotakis announced the signing of an agreement for the transportation of natural gas from Greece to Ukraine, emphasizing both the economic and geopolitical aspects of the project. The Vertical Corridor targets not only energy but also transport infrastructure and trade between Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine.
ATLANTIC SEE LNG TRADE, a joint venture, will accelerate the implementation of this corridor, having an agreement for the delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the USA starting in 2026. The first LNG shipment will arrive in Ukraine in March 2026, with a maximum delivery capacity of 1 million MWh. A scheduled meeting in Washington will discuss the expansion of participation from other European countries in the project. American officials, including the special envoy of the Department of Energy, Joshua Volz, emphasized that the Vertical Corridor is essential for decoupling the European Union from Russian gas, thus confirming the relevance and viability of this initiative.
