UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk was declared ''persona non grata'' by the Venezuelan Parliament on Tuesday after his organization criticized the situation of fundamental rights in the country. The criticism was fueled by a report citing 70 arrests and serious abuses ahead of legislative elections in May 2024. The president of the National Assembly called for an end to collaboration with Turk's office, accusing it of indifference to crimes committed against Venezuelan migrants. The UN office was expelled in February 2024 but resumed its activities in December 2024.
