The United States military has drawn up new plans to resume operations against Iran, including the use of the GBU-43/B MOAB bomb, if President Donald Trump were to order strikes before or after the November 3 midterm elections. According to sources cited by CNN, the targets could include energy infrastructure and Iranian nuclear facilities.
The use of the so-called “mother of all bombs,” the largest non-nuclear bomb in the American arsenal, would represent a major escalation. Sources familiar with the military plans have, however, questioned the weapon’s effectiveness in achieving Trump’s stated strategic objectives or changing the course of the war.
The information comes after more than six months of bombing and at a time when the conflict has become increasingly unpopular in the United States. The Trump administration is seeking a formula for an ending presented as “definitive,” while Republicans prepare for possible electoral consequences.
Meanwhile, Iran is said to have changed its strategy in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian sources cited by Reuters claim that Tehran has intensified attacks on commercial vessels over the past ten days, in order to keep oil prices high and influence the American elections.
