At the meeting in Scotland, Ursula von der Leyen and Donald Trump are targeting a trade deal that would avoid tariffs of up to 30% on European goods imported into the US. A 15% rate for these products is being discussed in the context of a review of US trade policy. Although a deal would be considered weak compared to European expectations, it would remove economic uncertainty and protect the interests of European businesses. In the absence of a deal, the EU has prepared retaliatory trade measures.
