The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has sparked controversy with her statements that Europe "can no longer be the guardian of the old world order." She has been criticized by high-ranking European officials, including the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the Vice-President of the EC, Teresa Ribera, who emphasized the importance of maintaining an international order based on norms.

Von der Leyen stated that Europe must find and build its own path and find creative ways to address global crises, in the context of an increasingly conflictual world. Criticism also came from the European Parliament and the Spanish government, which highlighted the need to defend international legislation as a central element of European security. Costa stated that the EU must defend the international order, while Ribera acknowledged Von der Leyen's commitment to these principles.
