The Ukrainian Navy announced that it struck six Russian Su-34M bombers stationed at the Borisoglebsk military airfield in the Voronezh region, in the European part of Russia, on Thursday morning. The attack was reportedly carried out using Ukrainian-made Neptune cruise missiles.
According to the statement cited by the EFE news agency and carried by Agerpres, equipment used by the Russian air force was also hit during the operation. The Ukrainian Navy says secondary explosions also occurred at the airfield.
Ukrainian forces say the Su-34M bombers are an important target because they can simultaneously carry several guided bombs with a high explosive capacity, as well as various types of missiles. Russia uses these aircraft to attack Ukrainian fortifications and cities under Kyiv’s control.
According to the assessment presented by the Ukrainian Navy, the destruction or damage of the bombers could reduce the Russian air force’s ability to support troops on the front line and in nearby areas. Information about the extent of the damage and the exact number of affected aircraft has not been independently confirmed.
