The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, declared on Tuesday that Ukraine will officially allow the export of surplus domestically manufactured weapons, in the context of the war. Zelensky emphasized that Ukrainian expertise and armaments, tested in the current conflict, are of interest to international partners who wish to protect their sovereignty.
Previously, cooperation in the defense sector was limited, with Ukraine only offering expertise in combat, out of fear of losing technology and influence. Although the ban on defense exports was lifted in September last year, the government has been reluctant to allow uncontrolled exports.
Now, the new rules will allow the export of only surplus production, under the coordination of the National Security and Defense Council, which will ensure that the internal needs of the defense forces are met. Zelensky proposed to partners a special cooperation, in which Ukraine will provide drones and other weapons in exchange for the opening of production facilities in other countries.
