The British government has declared itself open, for the first time, to issuing an official apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, during King Charles’s visit to the Caribbean. The change in position was announced by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, amid discussions held within the Commonwealth.

Until now, the authorities in London have rejected calls for an official apology and financial compensation for the colonial past. The British government’s new approach comes after increasingly firm appeals from several Caribbean states to accept historical responsibility.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, called on the international community to treat the issue of historical reparations with the utmost seriousness. The subject is due to be discussed at the meeting of Commonwealth heads of government, known by the acronym CHOGM.

King Charles will deliver a speech on Tuesday before representatives of the member countries and is expected to speak about the suffering caused during the colonial period. Buckingham Palace stated that the monarch will address these issues with sincerity and respect, but decisions regarding apologies and any potential compensation belong to governments.

London’s position provoked reactions in British politics. Conservative opposition leader Kemi Badenoch rejected the idea of an official apology and argued that the Commonwealth should look to the future.
