Donald Trump announced on the Truth Social platform that he supports former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was recently released, stating that he was "treated very harshly and unfairly." Hernández was found guilty in March 2024 of conspiracy to import cocaine into the U.S. and possession of machine guns, being sentenced to 45 years in prison. He was extradited to the U.S. in April 2022 to stand trial for drug trafficking. In the same post, Trump endorsed conservative candidate Tito Asfura in the general elections in Honduras. The current president, Xiomara Castro, has maintained cooperative relations with the U.S., including an extradition treaty, despite her ties to Cuba and Venezuela.
