In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump suggested that NATO should have been tested by invoking Article 5 to obtain the alliance's protection against illegal immigration at the southern border of the United States. This proposal comes after his participation in the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, where he met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump expressed his concern that, although the U.S. provides significant support for NATO, it is not certain that allies would intervene in their support in the event of a request. Article 5, which states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all, has been officially invoked only once, after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
"Maybe we should have tested NATO: invoke Article 5 and force NATO to come here and protect our southern border from new invasions of illegal immigrants, thus freeing up a large number of Border Patrol agents for other tasks," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
