During the ceremony in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized the potential of these treatments to help individuals with severe mental illnesses:

“In many cases, these experimental treatments have shown potential to change the lives of those suffering from severe mental illnesses and depression, including our veterans.”

The federal government will invest 50 million dollars in research on ibogaine, a psychedelic drug.

Trump joked about his desire to try ibogaine:

“Can I get some too, please? I will take some too.”

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that this initiative will accelerate the approval of research and access to new treatments. The decree removes legal barriers for researchers and could allow for the rapid approval of psychedelic drugs.

However, there are concerns regarding patient safety and rigorous research standards. Ibogaine, although not approved by the FDA, is used in other countries to treat opioid withdrawal symptoms. Other psychedelic substances, such as LSD and psilocybin, have been studied for mental health treatments but have encountered obstacles in the approval process.
