The President of the USA, Donald Trump, stated on Monday that he will not have meetings with Canada for a while, despite Prime Minister Mark Carney's offer to resume trade negotiations. Trump announced a 10% increase in tariffs on Canadian goods and suspended all trade discussions, accusing a "false" anti-tariff advertising campaign that used former President Ronald Reagan.

When asked if he would discuss with Carney at the APEC summit, Trump responded negatively, mentioning the difficulties in the relationship with Canada, although he appreciates the country and the Canadian people. Carney, on the other hand, stated that he is ready to resume discussions with the USA. He confirmed a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where they will discuss trade relations. The global tariffs imposed by Trump, especially on steel, aluminum, and automobiles, have severely affected the Canadian economy, causing job losses. The advertising campaign in Ontario, which used quotes from Reagan, was criticized by the Ronald Reagan Foundation, which announced that it would explore legal options. Ontario decided to withdraw the advertisement to allow negotiations to resume.
