The President of the USA, Donald Trump, announced that he will initiate legal actions against the BBC, accusing the corporation of improper editing of his speech from January 6, 2021, which created a misleading impression that he had called for violence. Although the BBC apologized for the editing that led to confusion, it refused to pay damages. Trump stated that he will seek between 1 and 5 billion dollars and that the lawsuit could be filed next week. The controversy led to the resignation of the BBC's director-general and the head of the news department. Trump mentioned that he has not discussed this issue with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer but promised to call him over the weekend. His lawyers had previously threatened with a 1 billion dollar lawsuit if the BBC did not retract its statements and did not offer compensation. So far, no legal action has been filed.
